ArtificeAfter I married, I visited my mother and saw that she had placed
a plate underneath the potted plant I gave her. It was the green
viney type. I told her the plant was a fake. She knew. She thought
the dish would fool people into believing the plant was real—and
it worked. She’d share this merry tale with others several times
after. I was amused with her trickery, and glad that my plant gave
her joy. Then one day, I got up, took the porcelain plate that held
the delusion of our harmonious family, and shattered it.
